Matthew J. Fleischman (Matt) passed away peacefully on February 6, 2026, with his wife of 55 years Diane and son Ross at his side. Born in New York City to Josephine Cowan and Ernest Fleischman on April 18, 1946, he is survived by his brother, John Fleischman and his wife Mary, son Ross and his wife Angela, grandchildren Moses and Josephine, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Matt graduated from Antioch College in 1967 with a BA in History. He taught in NYC before obtaining an MA in teaching from the Antioch-Putney graduate school. Choosing to work with troubled youth, he taught at residential treatment center in Dayton, Ohio before entering the University of Oregon to obtain a doctorate in 1976 in the education and treatment of persons with behavior disorders. With his life’s goal to make a difference and improve lives, he became a licensed Psychologist in 1982 and Marriage & family Therapist in 1991. Matt was Principal Investigator in research funded by the National Institute of Mental Health and co-authored the book “Troubled Families”. In 2002 he was awarded the distinction of Lane County Psychologist of the Year.
Matt treated a variety of conditions specializing in the assessment and treatment of individuals and families with ADHD and ADD. He became a leader in the Neurofeedback treatment of ADD/ADHD and conditions related to trauma establishing the Neurofeedback Advocacy Project (NAP) upon retirement from active practice. Today, the NAP trains therapists in 42 agencies in the USA and Canada in its mission to make neurofeedback treatment available to people most in need. In doing so, clients and therapists demonstrate success on the “Results Tracking System” (RTS) created by Matt to measure symptom change reported by patients each session. The RTS gives therapists the ability to improve client functioning with targeted treatment that shows clear benefits to clients, therapists and agencies. Matt presented the compelling success of the NAP and RTS at conferences in the USA and internationally. His work will continue.
Matt was an enthusiastic world traveler, visiting every continent except Antarctica (although he did get to Patagonia). As a member of the Eugene Yacht Club for 41 years, he served as Sail School Director and volunteered in many sail schools and regattas. He was an avid racer of Day Sailers and his Corsair F-24 Trimaran. Matt enjoyed downhill skiing and running 12 half-marathons with a 2nd place finish in his age group one year. He played classical to jazz piano and operated the sound system at the Jazz Station. Matt not only succeeded in making a difference but also had a good time along the way. He will be missed.
