Ethel
MacKinnon
Jul 25, 1933 — Oct 2, 2026
Ethel MacKinnon, 93, passed away on October 2nd, 2026 with her family by her side.
Ethel was born in Missoula, Montana to Molly and William Reeves. She grew up on a farm in Springfield, Oregon and graduated from Springfield High School. She went on to study pre-nursing at University of Oregon, finishing with her nursing degree from OHSU Nursing School. Ethel loved being a nurse and was especially proud of her work in public health.
In 1957, she married John MacKinnon. They shared three children and 56 wonderful years together living in Eugene until John’s passing in 2014. Ethel devoted her life to creating a nurturing home for her family. Her children and grandchildren will always remember her beautiful smile, delightful laugh, and her warm and generous sense of humor. Her caring nature provided steady guidance through every phase of their lives. Ethel’s love and support was unconditional. She was the heart of her family.
Ethel shared her love for gardening, art, and travel with her husband, John. Together, they explored 25 countries across five continents. She loved strolling through museums and art galleries, taking inspiration home with her. Her favorite moments of every trip were spent visiting fiber arts exhibitions, where she admired the skill and artistry of ancient garments and textiles from around the world.
Ethel was an exceptionally talented seamstress, knitter, and weaver, who loved watching the creative process unfold as she designed beautiful garments, sweaters, quilts, and hand-woven fabrics. She happily donated her time and skills to charities in need of knitted sweaters, hats, and scarves, and enjoyed teaching sewing lessons in after-school community programs. When Central Lutheran Church asked her to sew quilted banners for its sanctuary, she embraced the opportunity to be a part of such a special installation.
Ethel leaves a long-standing legacy of community involvement. She was a benefactor to the University of Oregon Art Museum (JSMA), recently celebrated her 50-year membership in the Fortnightly Club of Eugene, and enjoyed many years as a member of the Junior League of Eugene, Weavers’ Guild, Eugene Country Club, and the local Pi Beta Phi alumni association. She found great joy and lasting friendships in her many social circles, including her book, bridge, knitting, gourmet, golf, and walking groups.
All those who knew Ethel in the final years of her life will remember her strength, resilience, courage and grace in the face of illness.
She is survived by her three children, Malcolm (Melanie), Roderick, and Mary Ann, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Dr. John MacKinnon, her parents Molly and William Reeves, and her brother Dr. William Reeves, Jr.
A family celebration of life to be held at a later date
